Heading to university is exciting, but packing for it can quickly become overwhelming. The trick isn’t squeezing your entire life into a few boxes, it’s only bringing what you will actually use.
Space is limited
Student rooms are built for the essentials, not your entire history. Once your clothes, books, and laptop are out, that space vanishes fast.
Before you pack it, ask yourself: Will I use this every week? If the answer is “maybe, just in case,” leave it behind.
Ditch the childhood room
It’s tempting to recreate your old bedroom, but student life is different. Bulky furniture, old school binders, and piles of knick-knacks just steal valuable space without adding any value to your day. A clutter-free room means a clutter-free mind, especially when exam season hits.
Expect extra clutter
Almost every student forgets that they will accumulate a ton of new gear during the year.
Between new course books, uni hoodies, kitchen gadgets, and random souvenirs, your room will grow. Leave some breathing room now so you aren’t suffocating by midterms.
Home isn’t going anywhere
You don’t need to move everything on day one. Leave the non-essentials safely at home until you actually know you need them.
Pro tip: If space at home is tight, or you need to clear out your room between terms, a temporary storage unit can be a lifesaver. It keeps your extra gear safe, dry, and out of the way until you’re ready for it.
Focus on the experience
Your first few weeks should be about meeting people, exploring campus, and settling in, not tripping over boxes.
The less time you spend managing your belongings, the more time you have to actually enjoy student life.
What’s the one thing you couldn’t imagine leaving behind when moving to university?
