4 Tips For Organising a Last Minute House Move

Typically moving house is a long process, but sometimes circumstances insist that you need to move quickly.  Familial, financial or just timing situations can dictate that you need to move in a matter of days or weeks.  If you are faced with this situation – do not stress. There are some simple tips to help you get organised for a last minute house move.

1. Create a list

A check-list is your friend in this type of situation.  You will need to keep track of everything you need to do so you don’t miss a thing.

Take time to list out all the essential items such as cancelling utilities, booking removals, organising moving boxes and diverting your post. Putting time-specific items into a calendar is also helpful so you don’t miss a deadline.

2. Start packing immediately

Packing up a home often takes longer than you think, so start the process as soon as you can.

Start by packing up your least used items to get them out of the way. As you pack you should assess all pieces – do you still need it? Can you sell it? Is it broken?  You definitely do not want to waste time packing items you will no longer keep. Remember to label all the boxes so it is easier to unpack the other side.

3. Have a ‘Keep Me’ Box

There are certain items that you will always need to keep nearby. Things like wallets, keys, passports, lease agreements, medications, chargers and glasses/ contact lenses.  Dedicate a bag or box to these essentials, and make sure they are kept separate from your packing boxes.

You might also want to consider an overnight bag.  A fresh set or clothes and toiletries – a few basics that you can quickly access on your first day/night in your new accommodation.

4. Book Help

This might be a professional team of movers, or your mates with a hire van.  Whatever method you choose, book them in so you can be ready to move out of your current home at the right time.

If you have children or pets, you might also want to consider additional support here.  This will allow you to focus on the busy task of vacating your property.

Finally, a professional storage company can help relieve the stress from last-minute house moves. If the timings of your new property are not aligned, or the new place is a different size – having your own self-storage unit can be crucial. It will give you the dedicated secure space you need for your belongings while you arrange the details.  Shurgard have cost-efficient storage options available immediately, which do not require any long term commitments.

Last minute arrangements can cause anxiety – but if you create a plan, get your self organised and lean on help wherever possible – you can have a stress-free move.
