How you can protect the environment

How you can protect the environment

Earth Day is celebrated around the world on 22nd April.

Now in its 49th year, this day was created to raise collective awareness of environmental issues. Provoking us to think, and act, about climate change, plastic pollution and protecting endangered species.

“In Nature, nothing exists alone” – Rachel Carson
(Marine Biologist, 1962)

The focus for Earth Day 2019 is ‘Protect Our Species’. Human actions have upset the natural balance of plant and wildlife populations. Bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales (amongst others) are currently endangered and threatened species.

The good news is that we can do something about it. Through education, protective policies, embracing nature – and your own individual actions WE can make a difference.

Small Changes, Big Difference

What can you do today to make a difference to our tomorrow? Commit to at least one of these green initiatives:

→ Reduce plastic

The devastating impact of waste plastic on the marine ecosystem is well known. Make these simple changes to your daily life.

  • Stop using plastic straws
  • Use a cotton shopping bag
  • Take a reusable mug for your on-the-go beverage
  • Try beeswax wraps rather than cling film
  • Switch to soap and shampoo bars

→ Eat less Meat

Perhaps you already tried Veganuary? Sticking to an ongoing Meat-Free Monday will help to reduce our environmental impact.

M&S launched its Vegan range ‘Plant Kitchen’ this year, and Vegan restaurant options have exploded. It is so easy to access delicious, healthy and convenient plant-based food today.

→ Earth Craft

Share knowledge with the next generation. Let them know how valuable, but vulnerable, our world is through a craft activity with your kids.

Check Pinterest for inspiration. Make a butterfly feeder, hand print earth, or cute paper roll bees. Create together and set a family goal to save the bees.

→ Plant a Garden

Plant some seeds in your garden, on the balcony or window sill. Grow fresh vegetables, fruit or herbs that you can use for delicious home-cooked recipes.

You’ll be satisfied that you have reduced both plastic packaging and your carbon footprint.

→ Have a Green Party

Make Earth Day something to celebrate and spread awareness with a party!

Your eco-theme could be waste reduction with a clothes-swap party, or raise awareness of locally sourced, organic food with a dinner party. A great opportunity to promote your own green initiatives or share info on eco volunteer groups.

Happy Earth Day everyone!
