Hallways are not top of the priority list when it comes to decorating a house! They are the most frequently used area of your home, but they suffer from a lack of attention and often become a dumping ground for clutter.
Here are the top 5 clutter culprits – and our recommendation on how to organise a hallway.
1. The Shoe Pile
Shoes are kicked off as soon as you cross the threshold, and easily end up in a messy pile. Bring some order with a shoe rack.
These looks smart, and keep shoes out of sight – or in a neat row at least. Many units are multi-functional too so they can double up as a convenient bench, or table/shelf.
Make sure the space is not overwhelmed – put shoes that are out of season into storage (think boots in winter vs. flip-flops in summer) so the only options available are shoes that will be in-use.
2. A Heap of School Bags
These are another dumping victim! School bags are often flung off as the kids arrive home – so create order by having a designated space for school bags.
Cube units with baskets are great here – particularly with multiple kids. Each child can have their own space to drop off their bags or other miscellaneous school items.
If you don’t have the space for baskets, hooks work too. Make sure each child has their own specific hook (colour code if needed), otherwise it will get disorganised.
3. Bulging Coat Hooks
A massive clutter culprit are hooks stuffed with coats. Living in the UK we need a variety of coats from lightweight summer jackets, to raincoats to thick winter warmers.
While we may sometimes need jacket options during a season, it is unlikely you will need a bulky option on a summer’s day.
So put winter coats (and vice versa) into self-storage to lighten the load on your coat hooks.
Similarly it is also a good idea to have a dedicated basket or box where all hats, scarves and gloves can go.
4. Umbrella stands
You either can’t find these, or you’re always tripping over them! Umbrellas easily fall over, get tangled up in coats and generally don’t have a place to go. So, give them one!
Make it functional and stylish and choose a bright ceramic vase to go in the corner by the door.
5. Junk and un-opened mail
The hallway is also the landing pad for all your mail; you’ll probably pick it up just as you leave and it will get dumped somewhere. Particularly junk mail which will get discarded to one side.
Add an ‘in-box’ to your hallways so you can quickly stow all items that need an action (opening, shredding or recycling)! And remember to regularly clear it out.
