Renovating your home is exciting… until your furniture starts paying the price. Dust gets everywhere, paint splashes happen, and things get bumped or scratched before you even notice.
The good news? A few simple decisions can make a big difference. Planning ahead saves you time, money, and frustration later on.
Move what you can
The easiest way to protect your furniture is to get it out of the renovation zone. If it’s not there, it can’t get damaged.
Even moving things to another room helps. Less exposure means less risk, from dust, damage, and accidents.
Cover properly (not just anything)
If furniture has to stay, it needs real protection. A quick cover won’t do much if it’s not sealed properly. Loose sheets can shift easily and leave parts exposed.
Renovation dust is finer than you think. It gets into fabrics, settles on wood, and is hard to remove. Proper covers that are sealed well will keep most of it out.
Try to wrap furniture fully instead of just draping over it. Pay extra attention to corners, legs, and undersides where dust can still creep in. If possible, use thicker plastic or purpose-made covers instead of lightweight materials.
It also helps to lift items slightly off the floor. Even a small gap can protect against dirt, moisture, or spills during the work. The more sealed and elevated your furniture is, the better it will handle the mess.
Give yourself space
Crowded rooms and renovation work don’t mix well. The more space there is, the easier it is to work safely.
When there’s not enough space, things get knocked, dragged, or damaged. Creating more room makes the whole process smoother and safer for your belongings.
Consider storing your furniture
For bigger projects, the easiest solution is often to move furniture out completely. It takes the pressure off both you and the workers.
That’s where self-storage comes in. A storage unit keeps your furniture clean, protected, and out of the way while the work gets done.
Don’t rush to move back in
Once the renovation looks finished, it’s tempting to bring everything back right away. But what you don’t see can still cause damage.
Dust lingers longer than you think. A proper clean first will help keep your furniture in good condition.
