Top items taking up valuable space

Most of us hate the idea of clearing out our handbags, let alone tackling the kitchen cabinets, bathroom shelves or our overstuffed closets. But let’s face it, with the vast majority of the country on lockdown, now can be a good time to get rid of things you no longer need.

Don’t know where to start? Have a look at these five clutter culprits that could be taking up valuable space in your home.

Kitchen Gadgets

The smell of freshly baked bread is a nice thought, but how many times have you actually used your bread maker? And do you really need that apple corer and avocado slicer?

These (once) trendy tools may have seemed like a great buy at the time, but do you actually need them? Instead of holding on, chuck them away – you probably do most of these kitchen tasks with a normal knife anyway.

Clothes

The easiest to accumulate, clothes can be the hardest clutter culprits to get rid of. Still holding on to that crop top you wore in Ibiza? Saving that leather mini you wore in the 90s for weight loss inspiration?

Don’t torture yourself with pieces of clothing that fitted you 10 years ago. Instead give them a new lease of life by donating them to a charity shop or make yourself some cash by selling them online.

If you really can’t bear to part with your favourite pieces, why not put them in self-storage? Safe, secure and easy to access, you can store seasonal pieces as well as old clothes you’re just not ready to part with.

Toys

Now that the kids are older, it’s time to chuck those toys lurking in the loft and re-claim some much needed space. Expect some moans when you suggest the sort out, but don’t give in to hoarding armfuls of teddies.

If they haven’t seen the light of day for 10 years then your son or daughter can’t be that devastated to see them go. Let them keep hold of one, for nostalgia, then give the rest to a new home.

Books and Magazines

Everyone dreams of having their own library, with floor to ceiling shelves full of books. That is until reality hits and you’re renting a one room studio, with barely enough room for your bed.

Time to give up the dream and get rid of old books, magazines and floating bits of paper like bills, birthday cards or old work notes.

These days you can practically access everything you need online anyway.

Beauty Products

Feel like your partner’s always nagging at you for more shelf space in the bathroom? Give them the space they’re craving (just a little) by sorting your beauty products and chucking the ones you haven’t used in a while.

If it’s six months or older and sitting in the back of the cabinet – get rid of it. If it’s that far back you won’t use it.

There, you’ve done it! Put your feet up and relax. Cut down on your next clear out by being more conscious about things stacking up and throwing or donating items as you go along.
