Our Spring Cleaning Tips for a Brighter Home

The season is changing. Have you noticed the tulips and snowdrops poking out of the grass? Spring is now upon us.

So if it is Spring outside, what is happening inside? Time to give your home a refresh and – as the saying goes – have a ‘spring clean’.

But what is a ‘spring clean’ all about? It is simply a thorough, deep clean, of the house. It is likely to be driven by our increasing energy and motivation levels as we emerge from the dark of winter.

Whatever your reason though, a spring clean has multiple benefits; so if you are ready for a spring clean – this is what you need to do!

1. Deep-Clean Shower Head

Your shower head will see a lot of use, so give it some TLC. Fill a plastic bag with baking soda and vinegar and pop your shower head inside. For the best results, leave it overnight.  In the morning you can give it a scrub and all the debris and dirt will quickly scrub away, leaving a shower head that is as good as new.

2. Wash Your Shower Curtains

The shower curtain is often neglected, but take a good look and it is likely to be pretty dirty – and very susceptible to mould. Most shower curtains can be placed straight into the washing machine and be quickly refreshed!

3.  Revamp Your Mattress

After stripping your mattress of all the bedding, give it a good vacuum! Then give it a sprinkle with baking soda and leave for a few hours (overnight if possible) – this will absorb all the odours and moisture. Follow up with a final vacuum and your mattress will be looking as good as new.

4. Scrub The Oven

After Christmas and all the winter stews and casseroles, your oven will definitely need a spring clean! Baking Soda is brilliant for your oven too – so sprinkle it over the bottom and pour vinegar over the top.

You should see a satisfying fizz as it gets to work! Leave it for a few hours, or overnight again, then give it a good wipe. The solution should have softened up all the burnt-on food.

5. Let The Fresh Air in

Even if the air is cold, throw open your windows! Fresh air is excellent for your health and to remove the stuffiness in your home.

Get some fresh flowers, or pots of herbs, to place in the house too to add some fresh scents to your home.

6. Wash Your Windows

Windows are often overlooked during a traditional house clean – but give them a wipe and it will make a huge difference!

We recommend a home remedy of white vinegar and warm water mixed together into a spray bottle. Give your windows a spritz, followed by a wipe with squeegee. Finally buff with a microfiber cloth.

7. Clean The Toys

Give your toys a good spring clean by placing all plastics in the dishwasher and all soft, fabric ones in the washing machine. This will make sure any nasties are effectively washed away.

8. Spruce Up Your Bins

Smells can linger in your bins. This is due to bits of waste that are left in the container, or strong smells which can hang around.

If you are freshening up the house, than make sure you include your bins in the equation! Take them outside and give them a good clean with the hose.

Follow up with a wash with an antibacterial solution, and leave to dry. When ready, line the bottom of the bin with a paper towel spritzed with Zoflora to make sure the clean scent will linger.

9. Test Your Batteries

Ok, technically this isn’t a true spring clean, but an essential thing to check throughout the year. So, time your battery checks with your annual spring clean.

Have a look at your batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors to make sure they are functioning ok!

10. Spring Clean Your Winter Wardrobe

Finally, making some room in the house. Clear out your winter clutter! A good idea here is to move out your winter clothes to give you some space to fit your emerging spring/summer wardrobe.

Place bulky coats, or heavy weight jumpers into vacuum bags so they can be stowed away for another year. Stow them under beds, or in the back of cupboards to keep them out of sight.
