At Shurgard, sustainability isn’t a project, it’s part of who we are.

Across seven countries, hundreds of stores, and thousands of conversations with customers every day, we’re working to build a storage experience that is responsible, transparent, and helpful.

Our sustainability work focuses on four areas that matter most:

  1. Protecting the environment
  2. Supporting and developing our people
  3. Providing a safe and correct experience for customers
  4. Investing in communities around our stores

Below, you’ll find an overview of the steps we’re taking today, and the progress we’re proud of so far.

Caring for the environment

As Europe’s largest self-storage provider, we know our footprint matters.

That’s why we’re transforming how our stores are built and operated, with the goal of reaching Operational Net Zero by 2030 and Material Net Zero by 2040.

Expanding renewable energy

We are growing our on-site solar production and source our electricity from renewable energy. We are rolling out these technologies to more stores across Europe.

Using energy smarter

We invest in modern technologies (e.g. LED lighting, heat pumps, and advanced energy management systems), to minimise waste and maximise efficiency. This already led to a 64% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions since 2017.

Reducing water use & waste

Through water-saving systems, leak detection, and strong recycling, we reduce consumption across our stores. We have cut water use by 59% since 2017 and are committed to 100% diversion from landfills.

Building responsibly

All new developments and major refurbishments target BREEAM certification, and 70% of our stores now hold an A/A+ EPC rating.

Our teams bring Shurgard to life: greeting customers, answering questions, managing stores, and keeping everything running smoothly.

Training & development for every role

Every new store member follows several months of training. Support Center employees take part in a multi-week onboarding program. Throughout their time with us, employees can access learning opportunities from customer care to communication, time management, compliance, sustainability...

Supporting well-being

We promote physical and mental well-being through ergonomic support, wellness activities, social events, and access to mental health resources. We listen closely through surveys and feedback and adapt our approach.

A diverse and inclusive workplace

Our people represent 45 nationalities, and we’re committed to fairness at every stage of employment: from recruitment and promotions to training and pay equity reviews. Mandatory DE&I and anti-harassment training ensures that everyone feels respected.

Safety first

Every employee receives detailed Health & Safety training, and all properties are regularly assessed to ensure a safe working environment.
