We try to make things as easy as possible for you, that also applies to the administrative side of renting a storage unit. Below you can find a number of frequently asked questions about the contract, paying rent and how to cancel your contract.

Paying the rent for your storage unit

Shurgard offers three convenient ways to pay:

  • Direct debit or credit/debit card autopay: sign up in person at any Shurgard location and we will take care of the rest. We will automatically collect the payments for your monthly bills.
  • Pay at any Shurgard location in the UK: walk into any Shurgard facility and give the on-site manager your customer number and the location of the storage unit you rent. Then pay your bill using a credit or debit card.

The first payment for renting a storage unit can only be paid in advance using debit or credit card.

We accept debit (Visa Electron cards are in-store only) and credit cards (MasterCard and Visa). Unfortunately we are unable to accept American Express cards.

Yes, Shurgard charges a one-time administration fee of £20.

You only need to pay this fee once. If you are a returning customer, you don’t have to pay the administration fee again.

Yes, the price for your storage unit is VAT inclusive.

Signing a contract with Shurgard

  • For individual renter: a valid photo ID (driving licence or passport).
  • For business renter: evidence of link with the company (i.e.: business card) and a valid photo ID.

No, you do not have to pay a deposit when renting a storage unit at Shurgard.

You can rent your storage unit for as short as one week. Just inform the manager at your Shurgard location about your planned move out date when you sign your contract.

As soon as the contract is signed you can store your belongings at Shurgard.

No, there is no maximum rental period. You can rent a storage unit for as short or as long as it suits you.

If you wish to move out of your storage unit, just make sure to give us notice at least 15 days prior to the monthly anniversary date of the storage agreement.

The rights and obligations of the lessee and renter are included in Shurgard’s General Terms & Conditions.

Cancelling a contract

Notice must be received by us at least 15 days prior to the monthly anniversary date of the storage agreement.

No, you don't have to rent the unit for a full month. It's totally up to you how long you want to rent the unit.

We have a 15 days prior to the monthly anniversary date of the storage agreement days' notice period so if you want to rent for a shorter period, please let the manager at your Shurgard location know when you sign your contract.

Notice must be given in writing – either by e-mail, post, or at your Shurgard location.

The notice must contain your name, your unit number and the date of cancellation.

You must ensure that your notice is received by us at least 15 days prior to the monthly anniversary date of the storage agreement.

Please make sure your unit is empty and swept clean. You also need to make sure that you have removed the lock.

If this is not the case, Shurgard retains the right to extend your rental contract.

It may be the case that we have deducted the rent for the coming period before you submitted your notice of cancellation.

No further action is required on your part; any excess charges will be deducted from the final bill or credited to you separately.
