How you can protect yourself and your belongings
SHURProtect

Below are frequently asked questions about how you should protect your belongings when storing at Shurgard

Shurgard is unable to provide or arrange insurance for your stored belongings but is committed to providing you with safe and secure storage.

Shurgard will therefore accept liability for the theft of, or damage to, your stored belongings in certain circumstances (see below).

These FAQs provide more information on this and the additional ways in which you can protect yourself and your belongings.

Shurgard is committed to providing safe and secure storage.

If your belongings are damaged or stolen as a result of Shurgard’s failure to provide the service, then Shurgard will accept liability for your loss (i.e. the reduction in value of your belongings) up to a maximum of £50.

In order to claim all or part of this sum you will need to provide:

  • Evidence that the relevant belongings were stored in your Shurgard storage unit; and
  • Evidence of the reduction in value of the belongings, resulting from Shurgard’s failure to provide the service (including evidence of the original value of the belongings and evidence of the damage, theft, etc.).

Shurgard may not, at the outset of the contract, ask you for an inventory of your belongings, or for any information about their value, so it is crucial that you retain the evidence required above.

If the value of your stored belongings exceeds £50, then it is your responsibility to consider the additional ways to protect your belongings (see below).

There are two additional ways for you to protect the belongings in your storage unit:

  • Through your own third-party contents insurance. Shurgard is unable to provide, arrange or advise on insurance for your stored items. However, you may contact a third-party insurance provider or broker to arrange your own contents insurance. The possibilities for insuring storage units vary per insurance company.
PLEASE NOTE: the cover offered by many insurers for property stored externally is for a limited period only. It is therefore advisable to ask your insurance company about the options.
  • Alternatively, you may opt for SHURProtect where you can seek compensation in case of any theft of, or damage to, your belongings up to a maximum of £15,000. Where you do this the total service fee that you pay to Shurgard will increase.

If the value of your stored belongings exceeds £50, then you should arrange to protect your belongings in one of these ways and Shurgard will not, in any circumstances, be responsible for your failure to do so.

Shurgard will not, in any circumstances, accept liability for:

  • any reduction in value of your belongings that is caused or exacerbated by you (for example, if you place damp or insect-infested goods into storage and these contaminate your other belongings); and / or
  • any losses you suffer as a result of storing forbidden goods in the storage unit; and / or which it is unlawful for you to own, manage or control (for example, guns and drugs);
  • for consequences of acts of wars, hostilities, riots and terrorism, pressure waves or the unexplained disappearance of goods.

If you become aware of any theft of, or damage to, your stored belongings, you must notify Shurgard immediately. Failure to do so may limit or remove your ability to seek for compensation for the reduction in value of your stored belongings from Shurgard.

Shurgard will not generally accept liability for any indirect losses that you suffer, as a result of Shurgard’s failure to provide the service (for example, the loss of use of the belongings, the cost of removal and replacement of the belongings and / or alternative storage costs). However, where you have opted for the SHURProtect service, Shurgard may additionally compensate you for indirect losses up to a maximum of 20% of the SHURProtect maximum you requested.

Further explanations, including circumstances in which Shurgard will not or only partially compensate you for the theft of, or damage to, your stored belongings are set out in detail in the Storage Terms and Conditions and the Storage Agreement. You should read these in full before placing your belongings in storage with Shurgard.

The amount of the service fee payable by you to Shurgard will depend only on the SHURProtect maximum (and never on the actual value of the belongings stored in your storage unit).

It is therefore your responsibility to ensure that any SHURProtect maximum you request is equal to or higher than the full value of your stored belongings.

You can choose your customised SHURProtect maximum when you sign your contract online or at your storage location. Our on-site managers will go through the Storage Terms and Conditions and the Storage Agreement with you.

The General Storage Terms and Conditions and the Storage Agreement covers Shurgard’s potential liability for your belongings whilst in the storage unit. It is important that you read these in full before placing your belongings in storage with Shurgard.
